The load path, and the layers that keep water out
Structural bolting, anchor bolt assemblies, rebar couplers and formwork accessories, with the waterproofing, tanking and thermal insulation around the concrete.
The problem
A holding-down assembly is only as good as its weakest bolt, and a basement is only as dry as its weakest joint. Substituted grades, uncertified heats and a membrane specified for the wrong ground chemistry all look fine on the drawing. They fail at inspection, or years later, once the concrete is poured and the excavation backfilled.
How MST answers it
MST supplies matched, certified structural bolting assemblies (bolt, nut and washer from compatible grades with mill certification per heat), anchor bolt assemblies fabricated to drawing, mechanical rebar splices and formwork hardware. The waterproofing build-up is specified as one system (membrane, primer, protection layer and joint detail), matched to the ground aggressivity below and to SBC 601 thermal requirements above.

Minimum bolt pretension, RCSC / AISC slip-critical connections
Preload targets for pretensioned and slip-critical joints. Torque figures are derived (T = K·D·F at K = 0.20) and are indicative only: they are not a substitute for turn-of-nut, DTI or tension-control installation, and the nut factor changes with finish and lubrication.| Size | Tensile stress area | A325M preload | A490M preload | Indicative torque (A325M) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| M16 | 157 mm² | 91 kN | 114 kN | ≈ 290 N·m |
| M20 | 245 mm² | 142 kN | 179 kN | ≈ 570 N·m |
| M22 | 303 mm² | 176 kN | 221 kN | ≈ 775 N·m |
| M24 | 353 mm² | 205 kN | 257 kN | ≈ 985 N·m |
| M27 | 459 mm² | 267 kN | 334 kN | ≈ 1 440 N·m |
| M30 | 561 mm² | 326 kN | 408 kN | ≈ 1 955 N·m |
| M36 | 817 mm² | 475 kN | 595 kN | ≈ 3 420 N·m |
Preload values are the RCSC minimum bolt pretension for pretensioned installation. Always install to the method named in the project specification and verify with the approved inspection regime.
Below-grade system selection by ground aggressivity
The soil and groundwater report decides the tanking specification, not the drawing. Sulfate and chloride concentrations from the site investigation map onto the exposure class, and the exposure class sets both the concrete and the membrane.| Exposure class | Sulfate in groundwater | Typical setting | Membrane approach |
|---|---|---|---|
| XA1, slight | 200 – 600 mg/l | Inland, dry ground | Single-layer bonded membrane |
| XA2, moderate | 600 – 3 000 mg/l | Urban, seasonal water table | Two-layer + protection board |
| XA3, severe | 3 000 – 6 000 mg/l | Coastal, sabkha margin | Full tanking + crystalline backup |
| Beyond XA3 | > 6 000 mg/l | Jubail / Ras Al Khair sabkha | Specialist design + sulfate-resisting substrate |
Classes follow EN 206 / BS 8500 exposure conventions. Always design from the project's own geotechnical and groundwater chemistry report, sabkha chemistry varies sharply over short distances.

Environment & finish
Corrosion strategy, by site condition
The Kingdom is not one environment. The finish that lasts twenty years in Riyadh will fail inside a warranty period on the Gulf coast.
Cast-in and buried assemblies
Hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A153 Class C on the exposed projection, with the embedded length left black or galvanized to match the specification. Anchor bolt assemblies are supplied with sacrificial nuts and site templates to protect thread during the pour.
Coastal and Gulf-side structures
For Jubail, Yanbu, Ras Al Khair and Red Sea sites, exposed bolting moves to hot-dip galvanized plus duplex coating, or to A4 / AISI 316 stainless where the specification calls for it. Galvanized A490 is not supplied, the standard prohibits it.
Sabkha and aggressive groundwater
Eastern Province coastal ground carries high sulfate and chloride concentrations. Below-grade systems are specified for the measured aggressivity class, with sulfate-resisting substrates, fully bonded membranes to limit lateral water tracking, and protection boards installed before backfill rather than after.
Roof thermal cycling and UV
Exposed roof surfaces in Riyadh and the Eastern Province swing far beyond ambient. Membranes are either protected under screed and insulation or specified UV-stable with a reflective topcoat, a high solar reflectance index cuts both membrane fatigue and the cooling load behind it.

How we source
Three corridors, one certification regime.
Where a line comes from changes its lead time, its certification route and its landed cost. We state the corridor openly rather than hiding it behind 'globally sourced', it is usually the first thing a procurement manager needs to know.
